Industry report: Marketmedia24 sheds light on developments in the stationery market

22 April 2024

The new "Sales Performance Report Stationery Industry 2033" from Marketmedia24 has been published. It sheds light on market developments and sales trends over the past ten years and also provides an outlook on how the stationery market could develop up to 2033.

According to Marketmedia24, the past ten years in the stationery industry can be divided into three phases: In phase 1 from 2013 to 2019 before the start of the corona pandemic, sales did not fall sharply, but steadily; by an average of 0.3 per cent per year. According to the Cologne-based market researchers, this was mainly due to the significant decline in paper sales.

The rather calm developments changed abruptly in phase 2 from 2020 to 2021/2022, which was characterised by coronavirus. Lockdowns and working from home took their toll, affecting almost all stationery product groups. In some cases, such as writing and printing paper and ballpoint pens, sales plummeted by more than 25 per cent between 2019 and 2021, according to Marktmedia24, while fountain pens and art paints, which are primarily used for private and creative purposes, actually increased their sales during the coronavirus years. Overall, however, the stationery market lost almost a fifth of its volume between 2019 and 2021.

Phase 3 began in 2022, without coronavirus but with war-related crises. On the one hand, the coronavirus restrictions came to an end, which boosted economic activity. On the other hand, Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine began, which had a dampening effect on the economy, but at the same time drove prices up explosively in almost all goods sectors. According to analysts, stationery sales increased again - by almost 40 per cent for exercise books. However, growth weakened significantly as early as 2023, with many stationery products switching from plus to minus again; whether this was due to the significant economic slowdown or price developments remains to be seen. As a result, stationery sales rose by just 0.9 per cent.

Marketmedia24's new "Sales Performance Report" shows how the German stationery sector will develop in the future, providing a compact, graphically expressive and reliable outlook for the German stationery sector up to the year 2033. In their best-case scenario, the market researchers assume an increase of 21 per cent, in the worst-case scenario a decline in sales of 28 per cent.
