Adhesive application for sustainable packaging production
4 September 2024
At this year's Fachpack, Baumer hhs is focusing on its sustainability approach and, among other things, examining the extent to which adhesive consumption can be minimised or processes and products can be made more environmentally friendly in other ways for all applications.
One goal is to reduce the amount of adhesive applied. This is possible for many packaging products without compromising the quality of the bonds or their functionality. In combination with the intelligence of the control units, the performance of the electric application valves and the sensor technology enables uniquely precise dosing and application of adhesive to adhesive flaps. By interrupting the adhesive application process, i.e. applying precisely defined dots of adhesive instead of beads, consumption can often be reduced by at least 50 per cent - and CO2 emissions can be reduced as a result.
In other applications, such as pallet protection, the technology from Baumer hhs makes it possible to replace films with adhesive application. For example, outer packaging, transport and shipping cartons can be securely fixed to pallets by spraying small amounts of anti-slip adhesive onto them. The use of stretch and wrapping films or shrink sleeves is minimised or can even be completely eliminated. Currently, adhesive tape is also being successfully replaced with adhesive in projects for sealing shipping cartons.
Here are two examples of how Baumer hhs technology conserves resources and thus contributes to sustainable packaging production: The company's electric valves do not require a compressed air supply, as is the case with pneumatic valves. They are also energy-efficient, require little maintenance, are easy to repair if necessary and are generally characterised by a long service life. With their metal inner core, the new DF hot melt hoses reduce energy consumption by around 20 per cent. Furthermore, they prevent hot melt from burning in the hose and therefore also prevent valve failure. This reduces machine downtime and maximises availability.
As a member of the 4evergreen alliance and Sugra development partner, Baumer hhs is actively working on solutions for the future - including sustainable adhesives. At FachPack, in addition to its stand in Hall 2, the company will also be present as a Sugra development partner at the stand of the Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR) in Hall 4A (Stand 115).
